This slow growing tree requires good drainage. It will do well in a sheltered corner of a garden in colder climates or as a central focal point in warmer places. Will tolerate coastal conditions and hot dry climates, except it may need some shade in hotter areas.
A slow growing evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean and Western Europe, Arbutus unedo can eventually grow up to 40 feet in height. It has panicles of white flowers followed by edible red fruit. The flowers are pollinated by insects. They are particularly attractive to monarch butterflies in the Santa Barbara area.
