Slow growing plant that will grow in most climates. Tolerates full sun and deep shade. Needs adequate water.
These plants are native to Japan and fossilized remains record that they have been in existence on earth for over 150 million years. They look like palms but are not closely related. They have a thick stem, and are crowned with 2 - 3 foot long pinnate green leaves divided into narrow spiny leaflets. Will take 50 years to grow to full height of 10 - 12 feet.
Optimal Soil:
Must have well drained soil to prevent trunk rot. Prefers soil rich with organic material.
